Frequently asked questions
- What is a gray screen test used for?
- A flat mid-gray is the best colour for spotting uneven brightness: darker corners, vertical or horizontal bands, and the blotchy “dirty screen effect” common on large TVs and VA/IPS panels all stand out on it.
- Is it gray or grey?
- Both spellings mean the same colour — “gray” is American English and “grey” is British English. This screen shows #808080, the exact midpoint between black and white.
- How do I test for banding?
- Open the gray screen in full screen at your normal brightness and look for soft stripes or steps instead of a smooth, even field. Try “Dial it in” with darker grays too, where banding is easier to see.
